USA – Most individuals know that cats are independent, agile and stealthy animals, however, all cats have individual behaviors that are more tied to their owners’ personality than one might think. Cat owner’s physical activities, age range, gender and phobias, are some of the factors that can mark the behavior of these particular felines.
Just as parents’ personality has a great influence on their children’s behavior, the personality of cat owners’ has a great influence on their cats’ behavior as well. A recent study performed by the University of Lincoln, in collaboration with the College of Life Sciences, Joseph Bank Laboratories has found that the behavior of cats is highly linked to the personality of their owners.
The study was performed by surveying over 3000 cat owners, scored under the reliable Big Five Inventory. This is one of the most well-validated survey-based measures of human personality traits, which divides an individuals personality into 5 different categories consisting of Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Openness, and Neuroticism. These parameters were used to determine the relationship between cat owners’ personality and their cats’ behaviors. Through such study, Scientifics were able to obtain satisfactory results to prove their hypothesis, which states that cats’ behaviors are strongly bonded to their owners’ personality.
Like every other living thing, cats also have a life cycle to fulfill, however, many of their owners’ traits can generate either a positive or a negative impact in a cat’s lifespan. The study reveals that those owners who showed more extroversion, have less stressed cats since those cats are not always limited to stay exclusively indoor. On the contrary, those cats that belong to someone in confinement or who are exposed to the constant neuroticism of their owners, are much more aggressive and tend to suffer from intestinal diseases much more often than other cats. Even though cat obesity is more related to cat’s breed, it can also be stimulated by poor nutrition, as well as the sedentary lifestyle to which cats are exposed according to their owner’s habits.
This study demonstrates great similitude with parent-child relationship studies, providing great evidence of how caregivers have great influence not only on their child’s behavior but also in their pets’ behavior as well. Cat owners who reported higher levels of Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Extroversion or Openness, were generally associated with lower occurrences of bad behaviors. However, cats that belong to individuals with a higher level of neuroticism are the ones who reported more problems in their cats’ behavior.
