Bestselling author Hilda Gan on helping managers “uplift” their employees

Tap into their unique skills, respect and value their contributions, and they will love coming to work every day.

Hilda Gan has a distinct memory. She is having dim sum with her family in a restaurant in Toronto’s Chinatown. She’s seven years old, and the restaurant owner, Jean Lumb, is talking to her. Not just to her; she’s actually talking with her — as if she is her equal, as if she is truly interested in her. Hilda remembers how that made her feel: respected, seen, important.

Now the president and “chief people officer” of People Bright Consulting, Hilda tries to get corporate leaders to understand what a difference it can make to their employees if they feel valued and respected the way seven-year-old Hilda did. She gives them an acronym, REVUP, to remind them of the steps to take: Respect, Equality, Valued, Uniqueness, and Potential. “This is a set of principles and values that help people connect with themselves first of all, and then, as leaders, help them make other people feel empowered and uplifted.”

Hilda brings her own leadership experience to her consulting practice, including as a nurse, healthcare consultant, and executive with her husband’s IT company. In all cases, she has prioritized developing relationships with people — something that can’t be done in a day. “As a manager, you might talk to a person every day or you might talk to them only once a week,” she says. “But when you do talk to them, find a connection, create a relationship, because when you create a relationship, you create trust. And when people trust you, they are willing to give you the benefit of the doubt.” You might not know when you’ll need the good will that you have built up, but that day will come.

You can read more about Hilda’s journey, including how the loss of her father when she was only 10 years old shaped her character traits, in the inspiring new book Women Who Boss Up Post-Pandemic, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” The book collects 16 interviews with women who are side hustlers and multitaskers, who faced the uncertainties of the Covid pandemic — and other obstacles — by embracing their strengths and finding their authentic paths. They have so much to share and to teach, and while every story is unique, there is creativity and perseverance at the core of each one.
